IFTA Calculator

IFTA Calculator: Quarterly Fuel Tax by State

Type miles and fuel purchases for each jurisdiction, or import a CSV. You get fleet MPG, tax due or credit for every state and province, and a net total you can print for your bookkeeper.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Miles and gallons by jurisdiction

CSV columns: state, miles, gallons. You can also paste rows from a spreadsheet into a Miles box.

Your rows are kept in this browser only, so a reload does not lose them. Clear removes them.

Add miles and gallons for each state or province. Fleet MPG, tax by state and the net total show up here.

How it works

  1. Pick the quarter and fuelRates come from the IFTA tax matrix for that quarter, and the date of the rate table sits right above your rows.
  2. Add miles and gallonsOne row per state or province: miles driven there and tax-paid gallons bought there. Paste rows from a spreadsheet or import a CSV from your ELD or fuel card.
  3. Check the resultSee fleet MPG, taxable gallons, tax due or credit for each jurisdiction, surcharges on their own lines, and the net total. Download it as CSV or print it.

IFTA mileage and MPG: how the numbers connect

IFTA uses one average MPG for the whole quarter: total miles in all jurisdictions divided by total gallons put in the truck. Each state then gets its share of fuel as its miles divided by that MPG, so a wrong mileage figure in one state shifts tax across the whole return. This calculator does not plot routes. Bring miles from your ELD, GPS log or trip sheets.

IFTA fuel tax rates, surcharges and split rates

Every quarter IFTA, Inc. publishes a rate matrix for each member jurisdiction and fuel type. A few states add a surcharge line that applies to all taxable gallons, and fuel you bought there does not reduce it; in 2026 the matrix carries surcharges for Kentucky and Virginia, and for Indiana on some fuels. The calculator adds those lines for you and shows them separately. When a state changes its rate partway through a quarter, split that state's miles into two rows, one per period.

Questions

Is this the same as filing my IFTA return?

No. It is an estimate to check your numbers before you file with your base jurisdiction. Your state's return, its rounding rules and any credits it applies are final, so check your state's return before you pay. This is not tax advice.

Where do my miles and fuel data go?

Nowhere. The math runs in your browser, and the rows you type and the CSV files you import stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded to a server.

Do I add states where I didn't buy fuel?

Yes. Every jurisdiction you drove in gets a row with its miles, even if gallons are zero. You owe tax there on the fuel the truck burned, and a state where you bought more fuel than you burned shows a credit.
